Application of an oral health-related quality of life questionnaire in primary care patients with orofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders
2013
Objectives: To examine whether patients who report orofacial pain (OP) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) have a poorer perception of their oral health-related quality of life and, if so, to what extent, and to analyze the association between oral health perception, sociodemographic variables and reported pain duration. Study Design: 407 patients treated at the OP and TMD units in the Healthcare District of Cordoba, Spain, diagnosed following the standard criteria accepted by the scientific community – the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) – were administered the Spanish version of the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). Bivariate and …
Application of myofunctional orthognathodontic biodynamic therapy (Mobt) protocol in temporomandibular disorders: Therapeutic effects in pain and anx…
2019
SUMMARY Objectives. International literature on temporomandibular disorders offers show a relationship between temporomandibular disorders and psychosocial factors. This study aims to go beyond this already known relationship (fully supported by previous literature) and shows how the application of an innovative therapeutic protocol for temporomandibular disorders (called MOBT; Myofunctional Orthognathodontic Biodynamic Therapy), may generate relevant effects in respect to anxiety, pain and disorders associated to temporomandibular disorders. Method. A total of 40 patients with TMD underwent a MOBT treatment in a private clinic in Italy, and completed a self-report questionnaire for evaluat…
Influence of clinical and psychological variables upon the oral health-related quality of life in patients with temporomandibular disorders
2017
Background To analyze the association between the OHIP-14 and the different subtypes making up the clinical and psychological axis obtained using the RDC/TMD. Material and Methods 407 patients treated at the TMD unit of the Andalusian Healthcare Service were administered the Spanish version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders questionnaire (RDC/TMD), together with the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). The degree of association between the patients’ score in the OHIP-14 and the clinical and biopsychosocial variables was analyzed through bivariate and multivariate analyses, specifically through linear regression. Results 89.4% of the treated p…
Functional evaluation of a “lingual ring” oral device applied on patients affected by temporo-mandibular disorders tmds: A comparative clinical trial
2021
This study aims to evaluate the functional variations of the electromyographic response and clinical symptomatology in TMD patients. This study has been performed and compared before and after the application of a therapeutic protocol based on the use of an oral device working on the proper mandibular repositioning through the proprioceptive-based lingual re-education called “Lingual Ring”. Between January to December 2016, 32 TMD patients have been recruited out of a series of 321 individuals recruited at the Neurosensorial and Motorial Surgery Department, in Palermo (Italy). All the patients underwent the Surface Electromyography (sEMG) of Masseter and Temporal muscles, with different reg…
Dolor orofacial en músicos instrumentistas de viento
2012
The Relationship Between the Stomatognathic System and Body Posture
2009
In recent years, many researchers have investigated the various factors that can influence body posture: mood states, anxiety, head and neck positions, oral functions (respiration, swallowing), oculomotor and visual systems, and the inner ear. Recent studies indicate a role for trigeminal afferents on body posture, but this has not yet been demonstrated conclusively. The present study aims to review the papers that have shown a relationship between the stomatognathic system and body posture. These studies suggest that tension in the stomatognathic system can contribute to impaired neural control of posture. Numerous anatomical connections between the stomatognathic system’s proprioceptive i…
Severity of irritable bowel syndrome in patients with temporomandibular disorders: A case-control study
2019
Background To assess the risk and severity of IBS in a population of TMD patients. Material and Methods Subjects for the study group were recruited from patients attending the Dental Clinic. Health controls (HC) were recruited among patients' friends and clinic staff. All subjects filled in the RDC/TMD questionnaire and the ROME III questionnaire for the diagnosis of IBS. The IBS Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS) was used to evaluate the severity of each case of IBS. Categorical variables were compared through the Chi square test. The risk of having abdominal pain was analysed using logistic regression. Results Twenty-two (46.8%) cases of IBS were diagnosed among TMD patients, whereas only …
Tensor tympani muscle: strange chewing muscle
2007
This work seeks to alert medical and odontological staff to understanding and using interdisciplinary handling for detecting different pathologies’ common otic symptoms. It offers better tools for this shared symptomatology during therapy’s conservative phase. Tensor tympani muscle physiology and function in the middle ear have been veiled, even when their dysfunction and anatomical relationships may explain a group of confused otic symptoms during conventional clinical evaluation. Middle ear muscles share a common embryological and functional origin with chewing and facial muscles. This article emphasizes that these muscles share a functional neurological and anatomical dimension with the …
